CHAPTER 12

Thor felt his blood calm, though the song continued to pulse through his soul. As long as he held Adeline’s soft body in his arms, he felt as if all was right with the galaxy.

Have to be careful I don’t start getting an attitude like Rune.

Adeline felt good in his arms. He knew she was weak, but at that moment it didn’t seem to matter quite as much as it had before.

Though she was but little, she was fierce. He enjoyed himself so much in her chambers that he decided the best thing he could do was just not think about the future, taking the throne, or what it would mean to have her as his mate.

He let his eyelids sink shut and approached that twilight state between slumber and waking. Just as he was about to pierce the veil of sleep, the chime sounded at the door.

Thor decided he would ignore it. If it was something important, something that required his immediate attention, they would have contacted him on his communicator. But the chime came again and again, and at last he blew out an exasperated sigh and reluctantly left the warmth of Addy’s bed.

Grumbling, but keeping his voice low so he would not awaken his mate, Thor walked to the door. He nearly opened it before he realized he was naked. He cursed under his breath and dragged his trousers back on.

“I’m coming, damn you,” he growled low in his throat. He pushed the button to open the door, and it shuddered open. He winced, thinking it would wake Adeline up, but she remained slumbering.

His jaw gaped open when he saw the Vahking standing before him, an older Vahking with more silver than black in his hair. A cybernetic eye gleamed in his right socket, and a golden circlet rested on his furrowed brow.

“Father,” Thor said in shock. “What are you doing here?”

“I needed to speak with you.” Odyn’s gaze ran up and down Thor. “Join me in the observation lounge. And zip up your fly.”

Odyn strolled away from him. Thor returned to claim his shirt and boots. He got fully dressed in the hallway, so as not to awaken his mate.

He wondered what his father wanted the whole way to the observation lounge. It couldn’t have been an emergency. His father would never act so casual if it were. Yet he had the impression that even if it wasn’t an urgent matter, it was a grave matter.

Thor entered the observation lounge and spotted his father standing near one of the portholes, staring out at the celestial tapestry of open space. His hands were clasped behind him. He did not turn around as Thor approached, but he did speak.

“It has been a long time since we watched the stars together, my son.”

“Yes.” Thor stood beside his father. “It has at that. There seems to be so little time.”

“Indeed. Now that the horde has joined the Preor and the Earthlings in treaty, it seems there is no end
